When properly installed, your cover should look similar to the one pictured below. it should be snug to the unit, and anchored to the ground to prevent it being blown off.

Just as important as covering the AC Unit, is to make certain the AC is not turned on while the cover is on. Doing so can severely damage the system. one excellent way to do this is by utilizing the exterior disconnect, next to the AC unit itself.
Even though AC condenser is designed to be outside, the elements take a toll on things that are exposed. Ice can freeze and cause cracks in the condense, and ice and water can penetrate the motor.
